From Foot Gloves to Foot Mitts: No Rest for the Introvert
Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 1:13PM One unfortunate side effect of Vibram FiveFingers was the attention that was drawn to my feet. While many would love to be stopped and asked repetitive questions about going 'near' barefoot, the introvert in me silently screamed "NOOOooo...!" I still enjoyed sharing my adventure with many who sincerely asked, but it wasn't easy... definitely outside of my comfort zone.
I thought that switching back to something less obviously different like the New Balance Minimus, Merrell Trail Glove, or Terra Plana Aqua would put a stop to the curious, daily interruptions. Not a chance. It seems worse than before.
Neighbors, friends, colleagues, and students have stopped me almost incessantly. "Hey, where are your funny shoes?" "You look so weird in real shoes." I feel inclined to share the idea of wearing minimalist footwear of any shape or size and, more often then not, end up taking my shoe off and rolling it into a ball or describing it's features to appease the inquisitive. Great for disseminating information about making healthier choices regarding footwear. Not so great for my nerves.
Just wait until I start wearing my Soft Star Run-a-Mocs or one of many models of huarache sandals around. That should drum up some not-so-desirable attention. Minimalist footwear... no rest for the introvert :-)

Did you stop wearing the foot glove because it was uncomfortable. or was it just not what you thought it would be. I have read a few articles about it and have considered using them but there does not seem to be a whole lot of yeas or neas out there. Anyways I would appreciate any additional information you can share. Thanks
Honestly, Scott, I stopped wearing the Vibrams exclusively because a number of other companies have sent me minimalist footwear to use and review. There are pros and cons to the foot glove, and I hope to post about my year in Fivefingers in the near future and will include candid information on my experience, what I loved and what I'd love to do without. Sorry to leave you hanging...
